One of the simplest ways to understand how search engines work is to imagine a giant library.
When most people perform a Google search, they assume Google searches the entire internet in real time and instantly finds the answer. In reality, that's not what happens at all.
Instead, Google works much more like a librarian.
The World's Largest Library
Imagine a library containing hundreds of billions of books, documents, images and videos.
Now imagine that every day millions of new books are added, existing books are updated, and others disappear altogether.
If somebody walks into the library and asks:
"What's the best way to improve Core Web Vitals?"
The librarian doesn't run around reading every book in the building. That would take far too long.
Instead, they consult a catalogue.
Search engines work in a very similar way.
Google continuously discovers pages across the web, analyses their content and stores information about them in a massive index. This process is known as crawling and indexing. When somebody performs a search, Google searches its index rather than the live web itself.
Crawling: Finding New Content
The first job of a search engine is discovery.
Google uses automated programs called crawlers (often referred to as Googlebot) to find new and updated pages. These crawlers follow links from one page to another, read XML sitemaps and revisit websites regularly looking for changes.
You can think of this as librarians walking through the library collecting new books and checking whether existing books have been updated.
If Google cannot access a page because of technical problems, robots.txt restrictions or poor internal linking, it may never be properly catalogued.
Indexing: Building the Catalogue
Once a page has been discovered, Google attempts to understand what it is about.
The search engine analyses the content, headings, images, links and other signals before adding information to its index. Modern search engines also render JavaScript and attempt to understand the context and meaning of a page rather than simply counting keywords.
Returning to our library example, this is where the librarian decides which catalogue categories a book belongs in and records the information so it can be found later.
Without indexing, search engines would have to examine every page on the internet every time somebody performed a search. Instead, they use sophisticated indexing systems that allow results to be retrieved almost instantly.
Ranking: Choosing the Best Books
Suppose a library contains 10,000 books about digital marketing.
If someone asks a question about SEO, which book should the librarian recommend first?
Search engines face the same challenge.
After identifying relevant pages from the index, Google evaluates a wide range of signals to determine which pages are most likely to help the user. These include relevance, content quality, page experience, authority, freshness and many other factors.
This ranking process is why two pages covering the same topic can appear in very different positions within the search results.
The Rise of AI Search
The librarian metaphor has become even more relevant in 2026.
Google's AI-powered search features don't replace crawling, indexing and ranking. Instead, they build upon them.
AI systems still rely on Google's index to find relevant information before generating summaries, AI Overviews and other enhanced search experiences. The quality of the underlying content remains critical.
This means that the fundamentals of SEO remain largely unchanged:
- Create useful content
- Ensure pages can be crawled
- Help search engines understand your content
- Provide a good user experience
- Demonstrate expertise and trustworthiness
Final Thoughts
The next time someone says that Google "searches the internet", remember the librarian.
Google is not searching the live web every time a query is entered. It is searching a vast catalogue that has already been built through crawling and indexing.
The websites that perform best in search are generally those that make it easy for the librarian to find, understand and recommend their content.
